From Our Founder on What we do!

My husband and I started Just Plain Folks Organization, Inc in 2008.  We take in old computers and laptops so that they can be refurbished and reloaded.  Then we give them away for free to people that have terminal illnesses , returning Military Veterans, and Disabled Veterans around the United States.  We really need help getting people to donate computers because our waiting list is a long one.

When a person donates their old equipment, it takes about one week to determine if the computer/laptop can be wiped clean and reloaded.  Then we see who is next in line for a free computer.  Sometimes we travel to other states to deliver the computers.  We have been doing this work out of our own pockets.

We do not get monetary donations (although it would help) from outside sources.  We have sent out letters and pleadings to local television stations, famous stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Ellen Degeneris and Tina Stull. Unfortunately none of the entities or people will respond with any help.  We have asked the Microsoft Corporation for old operating systems to be donated to us but what we got in return was "Computing for Dummies" books.  The Haiku OS Group, Ubuntu Linux and Oracle/Sun (Solaris) are the only ones who have willingly helped us, with operating systems for the readied computers.

On the flip side, this is a very rewarding type of volunteerism that we do.  We have watched children's faces light up and older folks with cancer and dialysis patients totally stutter when they do not have to pay anything for their computer they get.  The few Disabled Veterans that we have been able to give a computer to say that it has helped them to stay in contact with friends and family on the internet as they cannot get out of the house as often as they would like.

We will continue to work our organization to "help those to help themselves" and be able to communicate where they could not before.
